Safety Planning and Calling the Police – Season 2 Episode 2

Episode 2: Safety Planning and Calling the Police – What Every Family Needs to Know

We are pleased to share the second episode in Season 2 of The Capa Podcast: “Safety Planning and Calling the Police”, now available to listen. In this episode, we explore one of the most challenging parts of living with Child to Parent Aggression (CAPA/CAPVA): how to keep everyone safe during incidents, and when involving the police may be necessary, often before things escalate as part of your safety planning.

For many parents and carers, moments of crisis can feel frightening and overwhelming. In this episode, our Senior Practitioner Matt, together with a guest expert, explains clear and practical strategies to help you prepare for difficult situations. We talk about how to plan ahead for safety, how to de-escalate when possible, and how to make informed decisions about contacting the police.

This conversation is designed first and foremost for families, giving you tools to feel more prepared and supported. However, professionals working with families will also find valuable insight that can strengthen their practice and provide a resource to recommend to those they support.

This season of The Capa Podcast is funded by East Sussex County Council, allowing us to make these resources freely available to families. You can both listen and watch these episodes.

If you missed Episode 1, Three Faces and Dysregulation, we recommend listening back to that episode for helpful background. Each week we will continue to share strategies, stories and reflections to help families face the challenges of CAPA with greater confidence and hope.

As an adoptive mum supporting her son through some challenging times, Sarah Fisher learnt about non–violent resistance (NVR) and adapted it to develop a more holistic approach – Connective Parenting NVR. She now shares the approach with families from across the UK and beyond and also trains other professionals working with families in this approach.

Sarah joined us for our latest #CapaCommunityConnections event to share information about NVR and answer questions. We had a great turnout for this online event, but for those who missed it we recorded it so that everyone can benefit from Sarah’s advice and knowledge in this area.
